What do I install?

There are two levels of management available, for both Windows and Linux.

The Local System Management product set consists of System Client for Servers,Desktops and Notebooks. Each of these contains a management agent, and a web server which provides access to the single system on which it is running. (You may omit the web server during installation if you wish). This management agent is what makes a system a SyAM Managed System. The Local System Management products are free of charge forever, and provide complete health monitoring and email-based alerting.

The Central System Management product set contains System Area Manager which can be installed on a Server or Desktop Hardware platform. This also contains a management agent and web server. But this web server provides access to many Managed Systems, providing powerful centralized management functions.

Things to consider:

One system running Server Monitor Central can manage many system systems running the system client software.

The System Area Manager Software is free to try. Their ability to manage systems is license-based. Upon installation of the software the 15-day evaluation period begins, after which a new license key must be purchased. But NO additional software is required.

Where to Begin:

For Desktops or Workstations running Windows 2000 Professional, XP Professional or a Linux Workstation Operating System begin with System Client for Desktops.

For Servers or Workstations running Windows 2000/2003 Server or a Linux Server Operation Systems, especially for RAID support, begin with with System Client for Servers.

See the compatibility matrix for the supported Operating Systems list.

Adding Central Management:

Once you have installed the Local System Management software on a set of systems, you can enjoy features like centralized alerting, event logging, asset reports, remote console, etc. by installing Central Management Software.

Using a System Image for Mass Deployment:

If you are accustomed to building one system with a master image and the taking a snapshot of the image to deploy to other similar systems there is one extra step that needs to be done before taking your snapshot of the system running the system client software. You need a utility to set the systems monitoring agent back to a fresh state.

This utility is not shipped as part of the software release and must be requested from product support.
